The Pediatric Dentistry

Getting your child to the dentist for the first time should be a fun experience. Kids are not born afraid of the dentist but they can be intimidated by the idea of going to the dentist. Pediatric Dentistry our office takes special care to use friendly, non-threatening, easy-to-understand language to describe each procedure. We want your child and you to feel comfortable from the moment you arrive at our Chester, VA office.

Your child's first visit to the dentist should be by the time they turn one year old. Your child's newly erupting teeth (which erupt between 6 and 12 months old) require dental care and will benefit from good oral hygiene from the start.

When New Teeth Arrive:

Your child's first baby teeth will start to pop out between 6 to 12 months of age and will continue to pop out until around 3 years old. Your child's gums may feel sore and tender during this time. We recommend massaging your child's gums gently with a clean finger, or a cool damp cloth. You can also use a Teething Ring to help soothe your baby's gums.

Primary teeth are lost at different stages in your child's life. Permanent teeth start to erupt around the age of 6 and continue to do so until the age of 21. In adults, there are 28 (32) permanent teeth (including wisdom teeth).

Adopting Healthy Oral Hygiene Habits:

It is important to remember that sweet foods and drinks can cause a new tooth to form, so make sure that an adult is brushing your child's teeth after a meal or snack. We suggest brushing twice daily for good oral health.

You should begin brushing your child's teeth right after the first tooth comes in. According to the AAPD, you can start brushing with rice grain fluoride toothpaste right after your child's first tooth. The AAPD recommends starting with pea-sized amounts of fluoride toothpaste once your child is 3 years old. We recommend reviewing proper tooth brushing practices with your child and letting them practice brushing. However, an adult should start brushing after a child is 8 to 10 years old. Children's hands are not fully developed until they are 8 years old, so it is hard for them to reach the back of the mouth.

Preventing Tooth Decay with Regular Checkups:

What causes tooth decay? Tooth decay occurs when sugars left in the mouth turn into acids, which can damage your teeth. Tooth decay is most common in children and adolescents. This is because many children and adolescents don’t brush and floss regularly and don’t go to the dentist regularly.

Your child should see the dentist for regular cleanings and dental checkups every six months. Fluoride treatments twice a year are recommended along with regular cleanings to keep your child's teeth strong. Tooth sealants work by sealing the deep grooves of your child's teeth. This prevents decay from developing in these difficult-to-reach places. Tooth sealants last several years but will need to be checked at your child's regular checkups.

Conclusion:

Pediatric dentistry is essential for children’s oral health and overall well-being from birth to adulthood. Pediatric dentists provide specialized care, training, and preventive services that help young patients maintain good oral health for years to come. Pediatric dentistry focuses on early intervention, encouraging positive dental development, and providing comprehensive treatments. Not only do pediatric dentists address short-term dental concerns, but they also help develop lifelong habits for good oral hygiene. As we continue to develop dental science and technologies, providing access to high-quality pediatric dental care is essential for maintaining smiles and overall dental health for generations to come.
